Project Work

The specialized research project in the bachelor’s degree programs in Industrial Engineering and Logistics addresses topics from the respective degree program and includes a term paper completed during the course of study as well as a presentation of the results.

The accompanying course “Scientific Work” teaches fundamental skills in research and supports students in acquiring key academic competencies. For more information, please visit the Website of Prof. Matthias Faes’s CRE Chair.

By completing this project, students are to be introduced to independently addressing research questions within the scope of their degree program. The goal is to familiarize them with scholarly work and to teach them how to critically evaluate scholarly findings.

Available topics are typically posted on the departments’ websites. Under the “Bachelor’s and Master’s Theses” tab, you’ll find links to the department pages as well as topics advertised externally. Alternatively, you can contact the staff of a department directly to inquire about possible topics. The department decides whether a topic is suitable for your degree program.

In the Industrial Engineering program, the project thesis can be written at any department within the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Economics, and Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. For the assignment of topics, please refer to the regulations of the respective department and faculty. In the Department of Economics, the project is referred to as a seminar. Further information on the seminars (e.g., application periods, number of spots, mandatory attendance) can be found on the Department of Economics website.

The project may, but does not necessarily have to, be completed as a team.

Each candidate must prepare their own written paper on the assigned topic in accordance with academic standards, demonstrating their individual contributions. The written paper should be approximately 15 to 20 pages per person.

After the paper is submitted, each candidate will give a presentation of their findings within four weeks; during this oral presentation, attention will also be paid to skills such as presentation ability, rhetoric, and expressiveness. The oral presentation accounts for 20% of the total grade.

For projects in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, the duration of the project should not exceed 6 months and begins with the assignment of the topic. If the duration of the project exceeds 6 months, the candidate is not entitled to further academic supervision or to submit the project. In this case, the project (without being counted as a failed attempt) may be repeated in its entirety with a new topic. For seminars in the Department of Economics, the time requirements communicated by the Department of Economics apply.

No registration with the Registrar's Office is required for a subject-specific project. Arrangements are made directly with the advisors at the department. Once you have completed your project, the department will report the title and grade to the Registrar's Office.
