The Bachelor’s program in Mechanical Engineering at TU Dortmund University offers you a well-rounded introduction to one of the core engineering disciplines—while also providing a strong foundation in engineering science for a subsequent Master’s program.

A distinctive feature of the program is its diversity and flexibility: Different tracks allow you to tailor your studies to your individual needs and set your own areas of focus. This enables you to align your studies with your interests and delve deeper into topics that particularly inspire you.

Right from the start of your studies, a structured introductory phase supports you in the transition from high school to university. Introductory modules and trial courses give you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the program’s requirements and gradually grow into academic work in mechanical engineering.

As you progress, you’ll encounter key future-oriented topics in mechanical engineering—such as sustainable approaches like Zero Footprint Engineering or applications of artificial intelligence. At the same time, you’ll have the opportunity to gain international experience and, for example, complete part of your studies abroad without losing valuable study time.

In addition to in-depth technical content, the program places great emphasis on hands-on learning. Labs, internships, project work, simulation exercises, and field trips allow you to apply your knowledge directly and gain insights into real-world engineering challenges.

Furthermore, you will acquire important interdisciplinary skills such as teamwork, independent scientific work, and critical thinking—skills that are in high demand in both industry and research.

A total of 18 weeks of industrial internship is required—consisting of a 6-week basic internship and a 12-week specialized internship. We strongly recommend completing the basic internship before the start of your studies; it provides foundational knowledge in the manufacture of workpieces and the assembly of subassemblies and products, and familiarizes you with the variety of different manufacturing processes. The first four semesters of the B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering program are designed to provide a broad foundation and develop methodological skills in the disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, natural sciences, and computer science. These include, for example, modules in mathematics, measurement technology, materials science, control engineering, electrical engineering, thermodynamics, and mechanics.

After these four semesters, students have acquired a foundation in engineering that enables them to make an informed choice regarding their subsequent specialization. To support this process, an information session on selecting a specialization is offered during the fourth semester. Students select their specialization by registering for the first specialization-specific exam.

The following six profiles are available starting in the fifth semester:

  4. Industrial Management
  5. Computational Mechanics
  6. Data-Driven Engineering

The seventh semester is devoted to a practical phase and the completion of the bachelor’s thesis.
