FAQ - Recognition of achievements abroad
It is advisable to clarify the recognition before your stay at a partner university in order to have planning security for your course of study.
A prior recognition agreement does not oblige you to actually complete this course or have it recognized.
You can submit an application for recognition for all modules contained in the module handbook valid for your degree program. Please also submit applications for recognition for Higher Mathematics I-IV, the extracurricular competence, the specialist laboratory and the scientific project work via the website.
No, recognition is a voluntary service. However, it is recommended so as not to delay the duration of your studies.
A request for recognition at another department must be made by the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the first step in order to be able to provide you with the documents with which you will later apply for final recognition.
If you change the modules while you are abroad, you must apply for a new recognition agreement. A recognition agreement does not oblige you to have them recognized.
Yes, recognition is voluntary and is only granted upon application. There is no automatic recognition.
Crediting is possible according to the following table:
Recognition of the Master's thesis/Bachelor's thesis including colloquium is always granted by a suitable chair, so recognition is possible if a chair confirms this.
Please independently identify an equivalent subject for recognition at one of the three universities according to the options listed in the module handbook. Then submit the application via the website and you will receive a prepared application back. If you are applying for a module at UDE or RUB, you will need to contact the lecturer yourself in the next step.
A careful pre-selection of equivalent modules and the provision of documents in German or English by you as the applicant as part of your obligation to cooperate is a prerequisite. You can submit an application for all courses planned during your stay.
Yes, a recognition agreement is required for both, also to include this in Table B. Submit the application via the website and it will be processed internally. Please note that only the actual CP number can be recognized for the extracurricular competence.
Within three months you will be informed of a decision in the case of faculty-owned modules.
Make sure that you attach meaningful documents, e.g. module descriptions, which describe the competencies in English or German to the application.
If you have already attempted an examination in the module at TU Dortmund University, recognition of credits earned abroad is no longer possible.
The ITPL advises on the crediting of ITPL module competencies for your degree at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Do you have questions about the recognition of modules or do you need support in selecting modules from our range that can be recognized?
Then take advantage of our advisory service for the recognition of ITPL modules!
CONSULTATION HOURS: Wednesdays, 11:00 - 12:00
LOCATION: MB1 Room 306
Achievements abroad cannot be recognized if an examination procedure for the corresponding module has already been started at TU Dortmund University.
The examination procedure is deemed to have begun when the examination has been passed or failed. Withdrawal with a certificate at the first attempt is also considered to be started! On the other hand, a timely withdrawal before the first attempt is considered an examination procedure that has not begun.

Students can also complete Bachelor's/Master's/specialist project work abroad and have it recognized at TU Dortmund University. You must first identify a chair to which this topic could be assigned. The application must include an abstract and the module description of the partner. This must then be checked as in the usual process and a decision made on recognition.
