With an exciting and diverse program, TU Dortmund University welcomed the start of the 2025/26 winter semester on Monday, October 13.

As is tradition, the welcome ceremony for new students took place at the BVB stadium. This year, there were around 5,180 new and first-time enrollments, which represents a slight increase in the number of first-year students compared to the previous year.

At the start of the new semester, the university has 29,355 students enrolled in more than 80 degree programs.

International diversity at TU Dortmund University continues to increase

The international profile of TU Dortmund University also continues to evolve: the proportion of students with foreign passports now stands at over 20 percent.

TU Rector Prof. Manfred Bayer emphasized in his speech: "I am delighted that the number of international students is growing continuously".

Starting the new semester with familiar faces

Christoph Edeler, Head of University Sports, hosted the semester kick-off event at the stadium and, together with Silke Viol, Deputy Head of the International Office, and the deans of the 17 faculties, presented important contact points and services offered by the university. AStA chairpersons Annika Ricke and Darius Weitekamp welcomed the new students with a warm greeting.

A surprise visit created a great atmosphere: surprise guest Kevin Großkreutz, former BVB player, joined Johannes Zedel from Studentenwerk Dortmund in throwing darts to determine the three winners of the “first semester” packages.

The event came to a ceremonial close when TU Rector Prof. Bayer gave the symbolic starting signal for the academic year: he kicked a soccer signed by the BVB squad into the crowd, where a lucky first-year student caught the ball safely.
